Waste: Wallonia tackles chewing gum and cigarette butts

The Walloon government will be able to require tobacco companies and chewing gum producers to finance public cleanliness policies to combat the scourge of cigarette butts and sticky stains.

Cis a particularly plump draft decree that the Walloon deputies approved this Wednesday at the end of the day. One hundred and eighty well-packed pages transposing six European directives relating to the circular economy and waste, for which Wallonia is already seriously behind schedule and risks the wrath of the Commission. From 2 to 20 million euros in fines for each of the three directives concerned: not sure that the Region can afford this luxury these days. The text carried by the Minister of the Environment Céline Tellier (Ecolo) puts Walloon law square with European obligations. But sometimes he chooses to go a step further.
