The United States strongly condemned the missile strikes on the Iraqi city of Erbil last night, which were launched from Iran.
And the US State Department, in a statement issued by its spokesman, Ned Price, considered the attacks a “flagrant violation of Iraq’s sovereignty.”
The spokesman pointed out that “no American facilities were damaged and no one was injured,” and said, “We have no indication that the attack was directed once morest the United States.”
The US State Department spokesman called on Iran to immediately stop its attacks, respect Iraq’s sovereignty, and stop interfering in Iraq’s internal affairs.
He added that the United States “stands with its Iraqi partners, including in the Kurdistan region, and will help its partners in the region to defend themselves.”
Iraq condemned the “blatant violation of the sovereignty and territory of the Republic of Iraq.”
The Iraqi Foreign Ministry stressed that “stances like this will only be a factor in violation of the principles of good neighborliness and will cast a shadow over the scene of the region to make it more complicated.”
After its meeting on Sunday, the Iraqi National Security Ministerial Council called on the Iranian side to provide a frank explanation regarding the missile bombing on Erbil.
On Sunday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard launched an attack with “ballistic” missiles on targets in Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, which it said targeted “an Israeli strategic centre, while the regional authorities in northern Iraq denied the existence of any Israeli sites on its territory.”
