Journalists Are Fired at The Washington Post; Employees strike for 24 hours
Washington: Journalists are on a 24-hour strike once morest the Washington Post’s decision to cut staff. The organization had earlier announced that 10 percent of the organization’s 940 journalists would be laid off.
More than a year and a half of negotiations with the union to reach an agreement in favor of the workers also led to the strike.
“This historic step is not a decision we have taken lightly. “We take seriously the impact this has on the people and communities we bring news to,” the Washington Post Guild told readers.
This is the first time since the 1970s that such a large-scale protest has taken place.
The Washington Baltimore News Guild, a labor organization, said that management’s mismanagement was the cause of the company’s crisis and that regarding 40 people had been laid off.
The union also rejected the wage packages advanced by the management.
At the newspaper owned by one of the world’s richest men, Jeff Bezos, employees are asking why layoffs are needed to overcome the financial crisis. But Bezos said the company needs to find solutions on its own, CNN reported.
During the strike on December 7, the guild asked readers to refrain from reading the newspaper’s contents.
Please do not interact with The Washington Post content for 24 hours. That includes print and online news, podcasts, videos and games,’ the workers’ guild said.
Earlier, journalists went on strike at Dhyan, America’s largest publishing group, and the New York Times. The Associated Press, a news agency, also went on strike in November over a wage dispute.
