The walkout comes after 18 months of failed talks over a new deal, which includes pay and telecommuting demands, and after management at the newspaper owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos warned that further layoffs were possible.

“This historic step was not a decision we took lightly,” the group told The Washington Post in a letter to readers announcing the strike on Tuesday.

According to the union, management “refused to bargain in good faith and repeatedly and illegally broke off negotiations on key issues, including wages and employee mental health support.”

The Washington Post union represents about 1,000 of the paper’s newsroom and support staff, according to its website.

In October, WP reported that the company had about 2,500 employees and that 240 people were to be laid off.

Traditional US media have been struggling for several years now, with readership falling sharply in favor of social media platforms.
