Washington Police Suggest AirTags to Combat Jacket Theft

At the beginning of last month, we commented here that the city council of the District of Columbia (United States) had started distributing AirTags in neighborhoods of Washington, D.C. as a way to reduce the number of car thefts in the region. Now, it was the city’s police department’s turn to recommend the Apple tracker to combat the theft of… jackets!

It turns out, according to information from the Fox5for some time now, jackets from the brand Canada Goose — apparently very popular among college students — have become the target of criminals in Washington, D.C., attracted by their high price, which ranges from $500 to a staggering US$2 mil.

According to reports, these jackets have been disappearing from student lockers at educational institutions, classrooms and more. The situation has escalated to the point where at least one person was coerced by armed thugs into handing over his jacket recently.

Asked about these thefts, the commander of the police department in the US capital recommended that students purchase AirTags to track their jackets in case they end up being stolen:

I’ve seen people use them [os AirTags] in tool kits, suitcases, I think this is probably the best thing you can do if [a jaqueta] be taken, because it’s a good way to track her.

Although the Apple tracker is indeed a good tool when it comes to recovering stolen objects, it is worth noting that it is not a good idea to go after a thief alone if one of your belongings is taken. In these cases, the safest decision is always to contact the authorities as quickly as possible, provide the location and wait.
