A recent study showed that wasabi may be beneficial in improving cognitive abilities and memory in older adults.
This research, carried out jointly by Tôhoku University and the Japanese company Kinjirushi, specializing in the production of wasabi, focused on hexaphane, one of the components of this plant, known to have antioxidant and anti-oxidant properties. -inflammatory.
The experiment was conducted on a group of 72 people aged between 60 and 80, divided into two subgroups. Every day for 12 weeks, the first group took 0.8 milligrams of hexaphane (equivalent to 5 grams of wasabi rhizome) while the second took a placebo.
The results, published online in the international scientific journal Nutrients, reported that people in the first group saw their episodic memory and short-term memory (STM) improve significantly compared to the second group. The benefits were notably observed regarding their abilities to converse for a short time, to remember a name when seeing a face and to carry out simple mathematical calculations.
