Wasabi, good for… Memory! This small green condiment, very popular in Japan and often offered alongside sushi, a close relative of horseradish and mustard, was the target of a study carried out by Japanese researchers. Their research, published October 30 in the scientific journal Nutrients and relayed by the site Science Alert, demonstrate that 6 methylsulfinyl hexyl isothiocyanate (6-MSITC), a bioactive compound already known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, might help older people preserve certain cognitive functions. The scientific trial was carried out on 72 senior adults – aged over 60 – for 12 weeks. The participants were randomly divided into two groups. The first had to take a wasabi tablet once a day, the second ingest a placebo.
A clear result
The result is very clear, according to the scientists: the members of the first group presented at the end of the test performances concerning episodic (long-term) and working (short-term) memory significantly higher than those of the second group.
On the other hand, 6-MSITC does not seem to have an impact on other cognitive functions, such as attention or reasoning. The bioactive compound would therefore act on the hippocampus, the part of the brain most important for memory.
