Tramwaje Warszawskie has announced a tender for the redesign of Marszałkowska Street between the Saxon Garden and the Rotunda. The changes will cover both tracks and roadways.

The investment is part of the New Center of Warsaw project (opens in a new tab). Its goal is to transform the very center of the capital into a comfortable, accessible and green public space. It will be an extension of what is being prepared by the Municipal Roads Authority (opens in a new tab).

New green tracks

The project will include the reconstruction of tracks and roadways over a 1 km section. Between Królewska and Świętokrzyska Streets there is to be a green sedum track (opens in a new tab), while tram tracks from Świętokrzyska Street will be used as an emergency lane for ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

For the convenience of passengers, Tramwaje Warszawskie also plans to widen and extend tram stops along Świętokrzyska Street. The renovation is to bring a long-term, lasting effect, so it is also planned to replace the drainage system and the catenary.

Rows of trees instead of asphalt

The key element of the changes is the design of space for planting rows of trees along the tram tracks.

The documentation contractor will have to develop a new road traffic organization commissioned by Tramwaje Warszawskie. It will take into account the reconstruction of the left lanes of the road, which are located along the tram tracks, into green belts with trees. The works related to greenery will be carried out by the Municipal Roads Authority.

Tramwaje Warszawskie plans to open a tender offer in April. The contractor with whom the contract will be signed will have exactly 422 days to prepare the design documentation.

The contractor will also be responsible for technical support and author’s supervision over the reconstruction of Marszałkowska Street. Its reconstruction is planned for 2024 at the earliest.
