Over the weekend, a series of educational meetings at Warsaw’s marketplaces was resumed. The city educator’s talks with merchants in Mołdawska Street were fruitful, and in Ursynów, she managed to establish cooperation with a foundation helping the needy.

The city did not waste the action as early as in 2022. City officials and educators talked to 142 merchants and 224 customers of marketplaces. They noticed a growing awareness of the value of food and the need to counteract its losses. Merchants approached the talks with commitment, which resulted in the collection of surplus food. Nearly 30 tons of fruit and vegetables were collected at 6 marketplaces.

– Our cooperation with the social side is already bringing real results in Warsaw. Together we save food from wasting. In addition to the fact that we actively support non-governmental organizations, we focus on education – we teach how to treat and store products so as not to waste them. I believe that our initiative will not only change the habits of merchants and local communities, but will also be a good practice that will encourage other marketplaces to organize similar actions and collect food in their area – says Karolina Zdrodowska, coordinating director for entrepreneurship and social dialogue, m. st. of Warsaw.

The project is aimed at merchants selling food products at Warsaw marketplaces. One goal is to increase knowledge regarding food losses and bio-waste. The second – the possibility of donating vegetables to those in need.

An educator with experience in the zero-waste trend will talk to the buyers. He will check how merchants deal with food surpluses. If necessary, it will propose feasible solutions, e.g. establishing cooperation with a non-governmental organization that will collect food surpluses and deliver them to people in need. The city hopes that in direct talks it will be possible to develop individual solutions that will lead to a reduction in food waste – in particular fruit and vegetables, which are wasted the most.

In April and May, representatives of the city will visit the markets:

at ul. Wołoska corner of ul. Odyniec in Mokotów, at ul. Mołdawska in Ochota, at ul. Namysłowska in Praga-Północ, at ul. Stalowa corner of ul. Szwedzka in Praga-Północ, at ul. Indira Gandhi corner of ul. Pileckiego in Ursynów, at ul. Słowackiego 45 in Żoliborz, at ul. Włościańska 35A in Żoliborz.

Last Friday, the educator met with the merchants at the marketplace at ul. of Moldavia. Traders at the bazaar were open and strongly interested in the possibility of developing solutions that would save food from being thrown away.

In turn, on Sunday, at the marketplace at the intersection of Indira Gandhi and Witolda Pileckiego streets in Ursynów, the first cooperation was established. Every Sunday, following the end of the trading day, the ART Foundation will collect unsold food, which it will give to those in need. The first collection will take place on April 23, 2023.

The educational campaign at Warsaw’s marketplaces is not the city’s only effort once morest food waste. There is a network of eateries in the city, i.e. public places where anyone can bring excess food. Anyone who needs it can take the products that are there. The network of eateries in the capital is constantly growing, currently there are nearly 50 of them. The priority of the policy is to reduce the surplus of food over the level of consumption, which will minimize food waste.

The city deals not only with the issue of food. It also develops projects related to sharing resources – Wspólnik, Spółdzielnia or the WawaShare platform. It promotes the circular economy, which is manifested by e.g. Zero Waste Fair and undertakes information and educational campaigns, e.g. Eko-poukładani.
