Warriors in Limbo: Head of State Seeks Transparency Amidst Rupšis Scandal

This is what he said after it became clear that the army commander Valdemaras Rupšys used these funds to rent an apartment from his son. Some of the critics called such a decision raising the appearance of a conflict of interests, and the head of the country called such a lease a mistake.

“It is necessary to resolve the issues of the legal framework in such a way that such ambiguities do not arise in the future. We are constantly challenged with what is right and what is legal. In this case, obviously, it was legal, or was it right? I think not,” the president told reporters in Spain.

“I think that the commander of the army has the right to a normal living space, so we have to adjust the legal framework in such a way that people are not placed in such ambiguous situations,” he added.

15min reported on Tuesday that V. Rupšys receives the so-called apartment allowance of almost half a thousand euros every month, for which he rents an apartment from his son.

On the same day, V. Rupšys announced that he was terminating the apartment rental agreement with his son, although he said he did not see a conflict of interest. The army commander also said that he did not see any wrongdoing in the fact that he rented an apartment from a relative with state funds, because he paid less than the market price, and his son could rent an apartment in Vilnius more expensively.

In turn, the Supreme Commission on Official Ethics decided to gather more information and assess whether to open an investigation into the army general’s apartment rental from his son.
