The cold and physical exercise increase the risk of cardiovascular problems. Dr. Recchia’s advice on not putting yourself in danger.
The resumption of sport comes at the top of your good resolutions? It’s a good decision, but with the cold, be careful not to mess things up. “Going out, making efforts when the temperatures are at zero, -3 or -5 degrees, in dry cold, when you are not prepared can cause vascular disorders, circulation disorders blood, strokes (cerebrovascular accidents), warns Dr. Christian Recchia. Indeed, the lower the body temperature, the less blood circulates easily. Specifically, the drop in mercury causes a reduction in the diameter of blood vessels, which complicates blood circulation.
How to prepare for it? “To be able to withstand the cold, you need to cover your neck. It’s commonplace but 80 to 90% of your body heat comes out through your neck“. Dr. Recchia also explains the interest of the protective mask: “It allows you not to suddenly take the cold at the level of the mouth“.

Choose the right equipment
To avoid putting yourself in danger, he advises once morest jogging and recommends doubling the warm-up time to prepare your body well and limit the risk of injury as much as possible. If you practice a sport in the cold, equip yourself correctly: gloves, socks and hat to prevent heat loss.
For cyclists, Dr. Recchia recommends riding slowly and not exceeding a speed of 20 km/h. “You must cover your hands, have your feet well warmed up“, insists the health professional. Caution is required for people at risk, pregnant women, those who suffer from vascular problems, etc.
