After strikes were held in religious hospitals at the end of last year, an emergency room is now the scene of the action. “On June 30, between 10 and 11 a.m., there will be a warning strike by the medical staff in the central emergency room (ZNA) of the Ottakring Clinic,” said Severin Ehrengruber, according to his own statements spokesman for the strike committee, on Wednesday via broadcast.
A rescue ban for the Ottakring clinic is requested for the duration of the warning strike. However, it was emphasized that acute and emergency care should be guaranteed for the duration of the warning strike.
The working conditions in the health sector are criticized. At least 20 percent more medical staff are required for the department or a “significant increase” in the ZNA allowance “in order to adequately compensate for the mentally and physically demanding work in an emergency room,” as it was said. A “fair distribution” of the emergency access routes to all emergency rooms in Vienna, adapted to the number of staff and the actual bed capacities, is urged.

The Vienna Medical Association showed solidarity with the “strike movement”. Legal support was assured in a press release. “The warning strike at the Ottakring Clinic is just the beginning. What is required is a 30 percent increase in gross basic salaries, a return and a stay bonus of EUR 24,000 (net and free of social security contributions) and a “significant” increase in night, weekend and public holiday compensation.
According to the dispatch of the strike committee, solidarity with the warning strike by the doctors also comes from the nursing staff. It was announced that this would also turn to the employer with a specially developed catalog of demands.
The fact that the medical association is thinking regarding strikes has recently caused dissatisfaction with the union. They understand the demands for better working conditions, but a strike at this point in time is not yet appropriate, according to a Younion (Team Health) broadcast at the beginning of June. The union was already involved at the negotiating table, it was assured.
The Viennese FPÖ Dominik Nepp, on the other hand, showed “full understanding” for the measure. The staff was at the end of their strength. Responsible for this are the completely inactive SPÖ City Councilor for Health Peter Hacker and the incompetent management of the Vienna Health Association, he complained on Wednesday. Nepp called for an emergency plan for the Vienna community hospitals.
