Multiple sclerosis is often manifested by motor impairments. The first symptoms include, for example, numbness. Here are the warning signs.

Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease of the central nervous system. Scars develop in the brain and spinal cord, which means that the nerves can no longer work properly. For those affected, everyday life becomes increasingly difficult to cope with as the symptoms progress. Here you can find out which warning signs can indicate multiple sclerosis.

What is multiple sclerosis?

According to the medical encyclopedia MSD Manual, multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease in which the protective myelin sheath around the nerves is destroyed. Impulses can then be carried on more poorly or not at all and there are severe restrictions on movement.

According to the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG), 2.8 million people worldwide suffer from multiple sclerosis. In Germany, around 280,000 people are affected by the nervous disease. About 15,000 people are newly diagnosed with MS each year.

Multiple sclerosis: This is how the first symptoms appear

Multiple sclerosis can present itself differently in everyone. According to the MSD Manual, however, the symptoms usually appear in flares. They may partially disappear and then reappear more intensely. The further the disease progresses, the more difficult it is for those affected to cope with everyday life. The first signs of multiple sclerosis are:

Motor symptoms:

Weakness Clumsiness Stiffness in arms and legs

sensory disturbances:

Numbness Tingling in the arms, legs and face, for example. Sudden pain when you touch or bend your neck

visual disturbances:

Blurred vision Misty vision Double vision

According to the DMSG, the first symptoms often show up as motor disorders. There are also many symptoms of illness that are invisible and can nevertheless severely impair the quality of life of those affected. These include severe exhaustion and depressive moods, but also dizziness and sudden pain.

Warning signs: How the symptoms can change

As the disease progresses, those affected suffer more and more from motor impairments. As the disease progresses, multiple sclerosis can present with the following symptoms:

Trembling and irregular movements Part of the body may become immobile Walking is more difficult Dizziness Speech is slow and slurred Painful muscle spasms

Multiple sclerosis is not curable, the disease is treated symptomatically. Nevertheless, the course can be influenced with targeted therapy.
