Mathew Carpenter, a 30-year-old British man, suffered from a glioma for 8 years. The brain tumor went unnoticed, despite a series of medical tests. Today he wants to share the warning signs, in order to save other lives.

A glioma that went unnoticed during a routine scan

Many of the ailments would have been preventable if the CT scan had detected Mr. Carpenter’s tumor in 2010, when he was 20 years old. What’s more, he never felt the warning symptoms of a glioma cancer, such as migraines or vision problems. “In the eight years that my tumor to the brain went unnoticed (…), I never had a single headache, not even with a hangover.”he confides to Daily Mail. And when he is sober, he sometimes suffers from aphasia. He simply thought he needed a speech therapist, but this is an alarming sign. Likewise, he attributed his great fatigue to his 70 or even 80 hours of work.

The first convulsions occurred when Mr. Carpenter was taking a flight to the United States. He fell asleep and when he woke up he remembered“making a strange noise, drooling, being unable to move and having difficulty breathing”. He thought he was suffering from sleep paralysis, but the attacks would then recur for months.

A brain tumor as big as an egg

Following a violent crisis in the middle of a work meeting, Mr. Carpenter underwent a diagnosis in January 2018. The results revealed that he suffered from a “brain growth of a glioma low grade – the size of a Cadbury creme egg”.

on tumor was removed in March 2018, during a long awake brain surgery. The doctors then tell him that the post-operative period will handicap him for months. To everyone’s surprise, Mr. Carpenter returns to his old hectic pace three months later, in a homeless shelter. He has also completed the Tough Mudder obstacle course twice, on a 10-12 mile track.

The battle is still far from won, however, as Mr. Carpenter has developed a second tumor cerebral, in addition to scoliosis and diabetes. Despite the obstacles, the man does not let himself be defeated. Thus, Mr. Carpenter plans to climb Mount KiImanjaro once more in April 2024, to support the MacMillan Cancer Support association.
