Warning of building collapses in Beirut and other areas due to new earthquakes

Rizkallah said in a statement, “We have repeatedly appealed to the Lebanese state to develop a plan to save these buildings and implement it, and the number in Beirut alone exceeds ten thousand buildings, to no avail.”

He asked: “Where are the draft laws to save these buildings? Where is the accurate investigation? What have you done as a state to save your people? You are making emergency plans and Lebanon needs an emergency plan in normal circumstances, so how about in these circumstances?”

He pointed out that “a large number of rented buildings are threatened with collapse because the owners are unable to renovate them,” calling on the House of Representatives to “meet immediately and take measures to protect residents through preventive laws, the first of which is to lift the responsibility from the shoulders of owners in old rented buildings, and to hold the government and its prime minister accountable for not publishing the rent law for non-residential places in the Official Gazette, and to request governors and mayors to evacuate buildings threatened with collapse, especially in Beirut, Tripoli, Sidon and major cities.”

In turn, the Lebanese Real Estate Authority warned in a statement of “the danger of the collapse of buildings at risk of collapse, which number no less than 16,000 buildings in Lebanon, not counting the buildings damaged by the Beirut port explosion and other buildings in Tripoli that were damaged by the catastrophic earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria, in addition to the buildings that were damaged or demolished again due to the war on the southern regions.”

The authority announced that “the areas with the highest percentage of building conditions are in Beirut Governorate, the North, and Tripoli.”
