Sea swimmers in Donegal are being advised to take extra precautions during the current cold spell, as the risk of hypothermia has become a meaningful concern.
A recent incident involving a local woman underscores the dangers of extended exposure to icy waters. The woman,an experienced swimmer,was dipping in Lough Swilly when she stayed in the water longer than usual while searching for her partner on the shore. The freezing temperatures caused her body to lose heat rapidly, leading to confusion and disorientation.
In her bewildered state, she exited the water at an unfamiliar spot, suffering cuts and bruises from rocks and brambles. Thankfully, her partner located her, and she received immediate medical care. To highlight the risks of hypothermia, the woman shared a photo of her injuries with Lough Swilly RNLI.
“We would urge the public to be careful in the sea,especially during this cold snap,” the RNLI stated.
Hypothermia can develop rapidly, even for experienced swimmers, and its effects can be life-threatening. Symptoms such as confusion, shivering, and loss of coordination can create perilous situations in or near the water.

Dr. O’Donnell: Thank you for having me. Hypothermia is a serious concern because the human body loses heat much faster in cold water than in cold air. Water conducts heat away from the body up to 25 times more efficiently than air. Even experienced swimmers can underestimate how quickly their core body temperature can drop,leading to confusion,disorientation,and impaired motor skills. In the case of the swimmer in Lough Swilly, her extended exposure to the icy water likely caused her body to prioritize vital organs, diverting blood flow away from her extremities and brain. This can lead to poor decision-making, like exiting the water in an unsafe location.
Archyde: The swimmer in this incident was experienced. What advice would you give to seasoned swimmers who might feel confident in their abilities?
Dr. O’Donnell: Experience is valuable, but it doesn’t make anyone immune to the dangers of cold water. Even the most skilled swimmers shoudl take precautions. First, always check the weather and water temperature before entering.During cold spells, it’s crucial to limit your time in the water—10 to 15 minutes is often the maximum recommended duration.Second, never swim alone. Having a partner or a group ensures that someone can assist or call for help if something goes wrong.know your exit points and always have a plan for warming up instantly after leaving the water.
Archyde: The swimmer in this case suffered cuts and bruises after exiting the water in an unfamiliar spot. How can swimmers avoid such injuries?
Dr. O’Donnell: Exiting the water in a disoriented state is a common risk when hypothermia sets in. Swimmers should familiarize themselves with the area beforehand, noting safe entry and exit points. Wearing protective gear like neoprene gloves, booties, and a swim cap can also help reduce the risk of cuts and abrasions. Additionally, carrying a whistle or a small waterproof flashlight can aid in signaling for help if needed.
Archyde: What should someone do if they suspect they or someone else is experiencing hypothermia?
Dr. O’Donnell: Time is critical. If you suspect hypothermia, get out of the water immediately and seek shelter. Remove wet clothing and replace it with dry, warm layers. Warm the core of the body first—chest, neck, and head—using blankets or body heat. Avoid rubbing the skin or applying direct heat, as this can cause further complications. If the person is severely hypothermic, call emergency services right away. Hypothermia can affect the heart and respiratory system, so professional medical care is essential.

Dr. O’donnell: I wont to emphasize that while sea swimming can be incredibly rewarding, it’s vital to respect the power of nature.The cold spell we’re experiencing has made conditions especially hazardous. Always prioritize safety over bravado.Equip yourself with knowledge, gear, and a plan. And remember, the sea will always be ther—there’s no shame in postponing a swim if conditions aren’t safe.
