In the next few days, children across Brazil will be starting another school year. This means it’s time to prepare your uniform and school supplies, but don’t go too far. After all, very heavy backpacks can cause great damage to the spine of little ones.
According to orthopedist Tadeu Gervazoni, spine specialist at Grupo Spine, inadequate weight and incorrect use of backpacks can lead to mechanical overload, which causes lasting damage.
Impacts for life
“This excess load can generate pain, lead to inadequate postures and changes in balance, which can affect the lives of children and adolescents in the future”, says the specialist.

According to the doctor, using a very heavy backpack can cause problems not only in childhood, during development, but can also have repercussions in adult life. At this stage, the spine will begin to show the effects of the abnormal stress it was subjected to in the first years of life.
Tadeu recalls that, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), 85% of the world’s adult population feels or has experienced back pain, and 70% of back problems may be related to the cumulative effects of excess weight and exertion during adolescence.
