The director of the Azul Environmentalists Foundation, Yohan Flores, said that the green algae has reappeared in a large part of Lake Maracaibo. In this sense, it is urgent that the authorities act on this matter.
The specialist indicated that this phenomenon has been observed since last June and is mainly attributed to the high temperatures recorded in the region.

He also said that the scum is just one of many problems affecting the lake, along with the oil spill. This action is caused by poor maintenance of the pipelines and the lack of machinery for water treatment.
If they are not treated, this will generate photosynthesis that causes this green algae to bloom quickly in Lake Maracaibo (…) As long as the treatment plants are not reactivated, we will not be able to see a completely clean lake.“, he said.
The specialist stressed that these systems have not been put into operation despite agreements reached more than a year ago with the authorities. This situation has caused wastewater to continue flowing into the lake and increasing pollution levels.
