2023 will most likely be one of the warmest years in Austrian measurement history. This is shown by the current interim results of Geosphere Austria from Wednesday. This September is already notable for its above-average temperatures. “If October, November and December are similar to the average of the last ten years, 2023 will be one of the three warmest years in Austria’s 256-year measurement history,” says climatologist Alexander Orlik.
“Many mountains are warmer than ever before”
“If autumn and the start of winter are a little cooler than in recent years, then 2023 will still be in the fourth to sixth place range,” Orlik continued. In this context, Orlik emphasized the importance of global warming and the climate crisis. 2023 confirms the trend towards an ever warmer climate. “Among the 25 warmest years in Austria’s 256-year measurement history, almost all of them are years from the recent past,” said Orlik.
September has already set records. Orlik referred, among other things, to maximum temperature values in alpine terrain. “Last weekend it was warmer on many of Austria’s mountains than ever before in September since measurements began,” he reported.
Examples cited included the measured values at the Salzburg Sonnblick Observatory at 3,109 meters above sea level on Saturday. It was 13.0 degrees there that day. “The previous September record was 12.4 degrees in 1997. Measurements have been taken at Sonnblick since 1886,” it was announced. At the Brenner Pass at 1,412 m above sea level, where the statistics go back to 1948, 27.5 degrees were measured on Sunday. According to Geosphere, the previous September record was 26.6 degrees in 2006. “Due to the partly mid-summer temperatures since the beginning of the month and the warmer than average next few days according to the current forecast trend, September 2023 might be one of the two warmest September months in measurement history,” said Orlik.
Cold front reaches Austria
On Wednesday, a cold front will move from west to east across Austria and end the extremely warm summer weather of the last few days with rain showers and thunderstorms. By the weekend it will be quite sunny once more and warmer than average with maximum temperatures of between 21 and 28 degrees.
