Warframe was always considered the MMO with space ninjas, the next DLC sends you to the 90s and looks completely different

If you Warframe you’re likely thinking of science fiction and space ninjas, but the new expansion takes you back to the 90s.

What kind of DLC is this? The next major expansion is called “Warframe 1999” and breaks from the setting that has been familiar in Warframe for over a decade. Instead of space ninjas in the distant future, the DLC features “Arthur,” a rugged hero in a leather outfit wielding a weapon eerily similar to an AK-47.

Arthur is a Protoframe, closely resembling the Warframe “Excalibur” and making his first appearance in the story of “Whispers in the Walls” – the major expansion from December 2023.

In Warframe 1999, you journey back in time to Earth in 1999. As Arthur, you team up with six other Protoframes to track down Dr. Albrecht Entrati.

When is Warframe: 1999 coming out? While an exact release date for Warframe: 1999 is not yet known, the expansion is scheduled to launch in winter 2024.

What makes Warframe: 1999 so interesting?

The most significant aspect of “Warframe: 1999” is its bold departure from the established sci-fi setting of the main game. This divergence offers a unique opportunity for both long-time players and newcomers to explore a completely different side of Warframe.

A fresh perspective of Warframe’s universe

While the space-faring Tenno and their futuristic arsenal are familiar territory to seasoned Warframe players, “1999” promises a different kind of adventure. This expansion allows players to delve deeper into the origins of Warframe and understand the complexities of the universe beyond just the Tenno’s fight once morest the Grineer, Corpus, and Sentients. It presents a unique perspective on the lore of Warframe by showcasing the time before the Tenno became the warriors we know today, providing a new layer of depth and intrigue to the existing storyline.

The 90s Nostalgia

Moreover, the “90s” theme is expected to resonate with a significant demographic, evoking a sense of nostalgia. The game’s designers have cleverly incorporated elements like 90s music, fashion, and technology, adding a touch of humor and lightheartedness to the Warframe universe. It is a refreshing departure from the often serious nature of the main game. The immersion into the 90s with its distinctive cultural nuances and aesthetics offers a playful distraction from the intense action and combat, making it a more immersive experience for players.

Warframe 1999 & The Future of Warframe

The potential success of Warframe: 1999 might heavily influence the future of the game. A well-received expansion might revitalize the player base, attract new players drawn to the 90s theme, and provide valuable feedback for future developments.

New Players

The 90s theme can serve as a gateway for a new generation of players who might find the main Warframe game’s futuristic setting intimidating. The approachable and nostalgic setting of 1999 might be a perfect introduction to the overall Warframe experience, especially for players who might be drawn to its more lighthearted and retro style.

Changes in Gameplay

The introduction of new mechanics, like the 90s-themed communication system or the unique gameplay offered by playing as Arthur and the Protoframes, might suggest a more open-minded approach to future Warframe expansions. The reception of 1999 might encourage Digital Extremes to further explore unconventional storylines and environments, expanding the universe of Warframe with more diverse aspects.

Community Response and Feedback

The community’s response to 1999 will serve as crucial feedback for future expansion development. The game’s success relies on engaging players with new content, and the developers will be closely watching how the community interacts with the new settings, characters, and gameplay mechanics. It will help them determine how to shape the future of Warframe. Whether the expansion is met with enthusiasm or skepticism will play a significant role in influencing future plans and design choices for the game.

Warframe 1999 – A Bold Step for the Future?

The Warframe 1999 expansion is undoubtedly a bold step for the franchise. It signals Digital Extremes’ willingness to experiment and venture outside their comfort zone, embracing a unique and nostalgic theme to provide players with a completely different experience.

The expansion’s success will determine the future direction of Warframe, and it will be interesting to see how both long-time and new players react to the completely new setting and gameplay in Warframe 1999.
