“All the candles are so beautiful,” exclaims Colline, 11 years old. Her mother, Isabelle, agrees. “It’s true that it’s a beautiful spectacle. And then, it’s a great initiative. It brings life to the city center.” In Waremme, it’s true that these 5,000 candles, which lit up the Place du Roi Albert 1er and the surrounding streets, were a real eye-catcher for the curious. And when they were not admiring these sparkling lights – which sometimes formed a tree, sometimes snowflakes – they enjoyed the pieces played by the brass band which had come for the occasion.
And if the town center of Waremme seemed, for one evening, to come out of a Christmas story, it is thanks to the Union of Traders, who worked hard to achieve such a result. “We started preparing everything at 9 a.m.,” explains Laurent Godart, head of the Fintro agency. “We arranged the candles according to a plan which was produced by the architectural firm A-trait.” But fortunately, they were not alone in the installation. “We were helped by around twenty volunteers.” Then, around 4:30 p.m., we had to light them, these 5,000 candles. And following an hour of work, the magic happened. Magic which was nevertheless short-lived since shortly following 9 p.m., everything had to be uninstalled. “Fortunately, the municipal workers are helping us.”

But whatever it was, it was well worth it. Especially since it had been a few years since the event last took place. “The last time was in 2018. In 2019, we failed to organize it because of the wind and rain.” Then, between 2020 and 2022, it was Covid. “We still put a few candles in front of the stores, but nothing more.” But this year is the right one. The candles lit up the place once more.

The kick-off of the traders’ fortnight
And this evening marks the kick-off of the “fortnight” of the Union of Waremmian traders. “For the end of the year, we are organizing a competition. When a customer comes to shop at a participating store, they can participate in the competition by scanning a QR code. If they are drawn, they can win a trip to Alsace, offered by Janique Voyages, or a €50 voucher, valid in the store in which the QR code was scanned.” A great way to encourage people to make their purchases for the end of year holidays at Waremme, rather than in large shopping centers or online.
