Last week, game publisher Blizzard confirmed that it was working on a new Warcraft game for mobile devices. Confirmation awaited
In its quarterly earnings report, Blizzard has just quietly dropped a little bombshell: “Blizzard is planning new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022, including […] putting all-new mobile Warcraft content in the hands of players for the first time.” However, despite the confirmation of a Warcraft game on mobile platforms, there are no further details, like the genre or elements of the Warcraft universe it will feature. Nevertheless, this is great news for fans of the popular MMORPG franchise.
Impossible to know more at this stage, in particular on the type of game in question here. Some analysts have already imagined a kind of augmented reality experience à la Pokémon GO. If this idea might have made sense before the COVID-19 pandemic, the various confinements that took place across the globe in 2020 and 2021 in an attempt to stem the epidemic have surely forced some ambitious developers motivated by augmented reality to revise their plans. This may be the case for Activision Blizzard as well.
Perhaps we will be entitled to a mixture of role-playing and adventure? Or a sort of League of Legends-style team fighting game, or Fortnite-style survival, all between orcs, night elves, undead and humans from the world of Warcraft? In any case, we will have to take our troubles patiently and possibly wait at least until the summer. Because the first half of 2022 should see the mobile version of another highly anticipated Blizzard game, Diablo: Immortal.
