Fribourg: Positive assessment of the reception of Ukrainians
Nearly 1,789 people have been received in 749 homes since the start of the crisis.
The Friborg Council of State draws a positive assessment of the reception of Ukrainian refugees in families. The momentum of “unique solidarity” has made it possible in all to receive 1,789 people in 749 homes since the start of the crisis on February 24.
The Minister of Health Philippe Demierre said he was proud, on Friday in front of the press in Freiburg, of the solidarity shown by the population vis-à-vis the people affected by the war in Ukraine. “Fribourg stands out from the angle of host families” thanks to the collaboration with the association Osons l’accueil.
As of March 30, barely a little over a month after the Russian military aggression, no less than 660 host families had already announced themselves to welcome displaced Ukrainians joining Switzerland by the thousands. “Whole cars have sometimes arrived in a village,” recalled the Democratic State Councilor from the center.
Unprecedented response
Faced with the scale of the phenomenon, Friborg activated for the first time the Ulysses staff, led by Jean-Claude Simonet, head of social action and responsible for ensuring the coordination and implementation of the measures. The challenges were summarized by René Thomet, Head of Gastro, Health and Safety at ORS Service.
Mandated by the canton to accommodate and supervise asylum seekers, this organization has set up a reception system in the premises of the former NH Hotel. It was a matter of centralizing the process of taking care of Ukrainians as soon as they arrived, knowing that many unknowns remained at the start.
