The survivors: at first we thought they were firecrackers
Stories are beginning to emerge of the terror and endless anguish experienced by the thousands of people who crowded into Crocus City Hall and who tried to escape when the terrorists opened fire first in the shopping center and then in the concert hall where to start the Picnic concert. A woman was with her 11-year-old daughter and she was buying ice cream in a cafe near the entrance when she heard noises and someone shouted to lie down on the floor. “We rushed to the children, lay down and started making barricades with tables and chairs, and several injured people ran towards us,” she told BCC Russia. Inside the theater some thought the noise might be part of the show.
