War in Ukraine: Up to 600 dead in attack on theaters in Mariupol

There are probably twice as many victims…

So far, authorities assumed that around 300 people were killed in the sneak attack on the theater in Mariupol on March 16. But according to calculations by the AP news agency, up to 600 people are said to have died in the Ukrainian port city.

The reporters spoke to 23 survivors, first responders and others with knowledge of the number of people seeking protection at the theater and viewed photos and videos from before, during and following the attack.

According to estimates, almost 1,000 people, including many children, sought protection from the terrible Russian bombings in the theater. The word “children” (Djeti) was therefore written in Russian in huge letters in front of and behind the theater – which the attackers ignored.
