They would be small fixed shovels of the MPL-50 type, those traditionally distributed to infantry soldiers. This model was developed in 1869 by a Danish officer and very little modified since then.

“The lethal force of this tool has especially been mythologized in Russia”, according to the British ministry. “Its use as a weapon also shows the brutality and low technological intensity that characterizes this war”.
