Russian officials will not be banned from the governing bodies of the International Olympic Committee. The latter refused to comply with the written request of the Federal Council.

In its response, the IOC explains that according to the Olympic Charter, IOC members are elected as individuals and do not represent their countries in the organization, according to RTS. “Those elected to the Committee are then delegated as IOC ambassadors in the sports organizations of their respective countries, according to the position quoted by the media. However, for the moment, there are no IOC meetings in which Russian members participate, specifies the committee.

As a reminder, the minister in charge of sport, Viola Amherd, wrote to IOC President Thomas Bach. In this missive, the Valaisanne explained that it was “essential that Russian and Belarusian officials are no longer accepted either within the governing bodies of international sports federations, or at the IOC”. And to specify that “in view of the situation in Ukraine, it was no longer enough to exclude Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions abroad. Now we have to go one step further.”
