The city of Bakhmout is considered the cornerstone of the front in eastern Ukraine. A breakthrough there would allow Russian troops to drive deep into the hinterland of Ukrainian lines. The city has meanwhile been transformed into a fortress by Ukrainian troops.
According to the head of the administration of the Lugansk region, Serhiy Haidai, in addition to the regular Russian troops, the mercenaries of the so-called “Wagner” force as well as the Chechen fighters of Ramzan Kadyrov also failed in their attacks on Bakhmout.
