As Ukraine begins to count its dead in the war once morest Russia, some names from the world of sport are among them. A young biathlete and two young footballers lost their lives.
FIFPRO announced the first losses in the world of football. Vitalii Sapylo21 years old and playing in a youth team at Karpaty Lviv and Dmytro Martynenko25 years old and FC Gostomel player died. We do not know if they are “civilian victims” of the fight, or if they had taken up arms, as several sportsmen or former sportsmen have done.
FIFPRO posted this message on social media: “Our thoughts are with the families, friends and teammates of young Ukrainian footballers Vitalii Sapylo and Dmytro Martynenko, the first known losses in the world of football in this conflict. May they rest in peace.”
Always in the sports world, Yevhen Malyshev, a biathlete who enlisted on the front line lost his life, we also learned on Tuesday. He was doing his military service, he was 19 years old. He played in a youth team before taking his “retirement” two years ago to join the Ukrainian army. We might see on Twitter a former teammate paying tribute to him with this sentence: “Heroes never die”.
