The intelligence services of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) presented this Friday, March 8 in Kinshasa, five civilians, alleged collaborators in the M23 rebellion in the city of Goma. Among these people, two former provincial deputies from North Kivu arrested on February 15 in Goma. They are Hope Sabini and Alio Ngera.
The security services present Mr. Sabini as a “one-man band” having recruited all four other “agents” including his cousin, Cyril Muhongya, tourism and environment expert in the provincial government of North Kivu.
According to the army, Hope Sabini, “admits to having been recruited by a certain Bahati, an active member and responsible for the finances of the M23 terrorist movement. He also acknowledges being an awareness-raising agent, recruiter and responsible for vetting for the benefit of Rwanda. He declares having carried out several espionage actions for the benefit of Rwanda and having provided strategic security, military and political information from the DRC to Rwanda through the M23 terrorist movement.
A sixth person arrested and also brought to Kinshasa was released for lack of evidence.
“These compatriots from North Kivu are real traitors in the service of the enemy. The specialized services of the army which work day and night in the service of the nation have put them out of harm’s way. Following the investigations, other traitors were also arrested and will be presented at the appropriate time,” said army spokesperson General Sylvain Ekenge.
Furthermore, the army spokesperson indicates that senior officers who cooperated with Hope Sabini are also under arrest. “Treason, infiltration, Rwandan espionage in our country are not a pipe dream, it is a reality, the facts are there. And for the most part, these are compatriots who are at the service of the Rwandans,” said Ekenge.
These arrested people are placed at the disposal of military justice from this Friday. They are being prosecuted for offenses of “high treason, collision with the enemy, participation in an insurrectional movement and criminal association”.
