The gentlemen of WAR CURSE On their third album with the simple name “Confession”, they continue to commit themselves to old-school thrash metal, which is probably the case with the name CREATORsong is inspired, doesn’t come as a surprise.
So when you start with “The Nothing (That Is Me)” you immediately notice early ones METALLICA one, which is due to the mid-tempo Gethrashe, but also to Blaine Gordon’s singing. However, the boys from Ohio can also do things differently, as the title track later shows, because they give out more aggressive shouts. What WAR CURSE deliver here may not sound really new or even surprising, but the talent on the instruments and the weaving in of other influences such as the groove á la PANTERA or one or the other SLAYER– or TESTAMENT Riff definitely holds up more than the current METALLICA Schnarch work or the weak attempt by EVIL to sound like those role models from the “Black Album” times.
With skillful solos, a few targeted hooks and subtle melodies and sometimes somewhat atmospheric approaches, like in “Power Of The Powerless”, you definitely set a tone. And with “Sowing Division” you have an anthemic and catchy highlight that also puts the pedal to the metal and shows that WAR CURSE can also be more courageous in addition to all the old-school stuff. Gladly more in that direction! Added to this is this GRIP INC. Cover of “Rusty Nail”, which of course stands out a bit.
If you want to know what METALLICA might sound like if they wrote and played casual, technically accomplished songs, you definitely have the chance with WAR CURSE. But to be fair, I would like to point out that the mix of different influences is definitely much more than a copy of Hetfield and co.
