On the occasion of World Sexual Health Day on 4 September, “Feels Like Talking. Together for Sexual Health” was launched – once again bringing the urgency of talking about sexual health to the forefront. Many people want to talk to a doctor, nurse, or therapist about sexual health, but often don’t know how. As such, the campaign emphasizes the need to create safe spaces for dialogue and recognize that sexual health is an integral part of overall healthcare. The “Lust auf Talken” initiative is supported by the Austrian umbrella organization of social insurance providers.
In 2022, AIDS Hilfen launched the “Fancy Talking” project together with the umbrella organization of the Austrian Social Insurance Corporation. Let’s work together for sexual health! The aim of the event: to take sexual health out of taboo areas and demonstrate its connection to overall health. In 2024, an online survey was launched as part of the campaign. The first findings indicate a desire for more opportunities to discuss sexual health within the doctor-patient relationship.
Experts believe sexual health is an important component of overall health and should certainly be addressed in health care. When it comes to taking sexual health out of taboo zones, better conversations are important. Once the taboo is broken, it will have a positive effect on preventing sexually transmitted infections.
Shame, fear of judgment, and uncertainty about how to begin such conversations are the most common reasons why this important topic is often overlooked by both patients and practitioners.
Dr. Mirijam Hall, President of AIDS Hilfe Vienna, explained: “It’s shocking how many people in the health field don’t get the chance to talk about this important part of health. This is where the Fancy Talking campaign comes in: we want to help ensure that these topics can be discussed openly without fear of stigmatization. This is the only way we can ensure that all aspects of health (physical and mental) are treated appropriatelyTherefore, Hall believes it is crucial to consider sexual health as part of overall health care.

Andreas Huss, MBA, Chairman of the Conference of Social Insurance Institutions and Chairman of the Austrian Health Insurance Fund: The healthcare field remains reticent when it comes to sexual health. Our collective responsibility is to ensure that these topics can be discussed without bias and with the necessary expertise. Therefore, we support AIDS Hilfen Österreich and AIDS Hilfe Vienna to continue to provide education through the ‘Fancy Talking’ campaign and to strengthen the capacity of treatment providers through appropriate training.
Information and training as the basis for joint discussions
Therefore, there remains a need to provide educational opportunities for patients and health care providers on how to address sexual health issues. AIDS-Hilfen has therefore expanded its activities for 2024, adding workshops, training courses and online consultation hours to support patients and practitioners.
