In Wallonia, the progressive ban on the circulation of the most polluting vehicles should finally be replaced by measures targeted at large cities. In any case, this is what the regional Minister of the Environment, Céline Tellier, will propose to the government “very soon”.
For the minister, the results of the study carried out between 2019 and 2023 by the ISSeP, the public service scientific institute, are clear: this ban, developed by her predecessor Carlo Di Antonio (Les Engagés) and promulgated in January 2019 , is not justified from an environmental point of view, she explained Tuesday in a committee of the Walloon Parliament.

Why do many companies like Leonidas decide to set up in Wallonia? “It’s much better here than in Brussels”
“In light of the results of the ISSeP’s work, the progressive ban on driving throughout the entire Walloon territory appears today as a disproportionate measure, difficult to apply on the scale of a territory as vast and diverse as Wallonia, and above all not very effective in really improving air quality”, justified Céline Tellier (Ecolo).
“The progressive ban on driving throughout Walloon territory, without taking into account the distinction between urban and rural areas, appears to me to be a poor solution to address an essential problem: that of air quality. This problem remains and it is crucial to take care of it, by concentrating our means of action on large urban centers, where this air quality must be further improved,” continued the minister to parliamentarians.

In this context, the latter will propose to the government, “in the coming weeks”, a preliminary draft of an amending decree and a financial support system for large Walloon cities through drawing rights. “Details on this system will be communicated immediately. My only objective is that we can all live in a healthy environment by deploying effective, relevant and socially just measures,” concluded Céline Tellier.
