Walking on hot coal leaves 25 injured in Switzerland

Twenty-five people have been treated for burns in northern Switzerland following walking on hot coals as part of a team building exercise.

Thirteen of them were taken to hospital and treated for more serious injuries following the incident last Tuesday night.

A large emergency response, including 10 ambulances, arrived at a private event around 18:00 local time, where this dangerous activity took place.

The group walked on a bed of embers several meters long and felt pain soon following, police said.

It is not yet clear if there was a problem with the arrangement of the embers or with the way the group walked on them.

Authorities have opened an investigation and taken evidence from the site, which is located on the Au peninsula, south of the city of Zurich.

Walking on a bed of coals, often known as walking on fire, is sometimes used in motivational courses and charity events, or the famous “team building”, activities to unite the employees of a company.

It involves walking barefoot on a bed of hot coals or embers. It is also used in many parts of the world as a rite of passage or trial.
