Piece by piece, the men pound the larch wood into the peaty soil. With every centimeter, the wooden slat penetrates further into the earth’s history, decade by decade, to arrive at a depth of three meters in the at least 3000-year-old peat layer. With average growth of one millimeter per year, that is how long it takes for the peat, which is essential for bogs, to build up such a volume. The process can be quicker, but it can also be slower depending on how the incompletely decomposed plant material transforms in the wetland.
