Mayor Sakaguchi of Wajima City, who appeared live on “Sunday Debate,” commented on the current situation, saying, “The number of evacuees is about 3,200, which is one-fourth of the peak number. However, one-way traffic continues on the main roads. “This is causing traffic congestion and hindering support.”

Regarding rebuilding the lives of the disaster victims, he said, “The first thing we need is water and shelter.Currently, there is almost no water supply, so we hope to get some water running between the end of February and the end of March.People who evacuated in the second stage want to return to their hometowns.” “We would like to proceed with the construction of emergency temporary housing by March with the help of the prefecture.”

Regarding rebuilding the livelihoods of agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and the traditional Wajima lacquerware industry, he said, “Recovery will be extremely difficult. In Wajima lacquerware, 80% of the approximately 400 shops and workshops were more than half destroyed. “The fishing port has also lost its functionality, and we need to rebuild the infrastructure as soon as possible.”

He emphasized the need to secure medium- to long-term human resources and equipment, and to provide financial support that goes beyond past precedents.
