Währinger Park youth sports facility modernized

Youth sports facility modernized to mark the 100th anniversary of Währinger Park and inaugurated at the large park festival with numerous sports and exercise activities

Vienna (OTS) – Under the motto “everything is fit for the future”, Sport Wien has modernized the city of Vienna’s youth sports facility in the 18th district, along Gymnasiumstrasse and embedded in the lush planting of Währinger Park, with an area of around 4,300 m2 over the last six months. The sports facility in Währinger Park is an important exercise space for neighboring schools and kindergartens and offers numerous sports clubs space for training sessions and courses.

Due to heavy use and the weather, a general renovation of the running track and long jump facility became necessary. In addition, the skate park will be equipped with a new energy-saving floodlight in October so that it can be used by the large skater community even after dark.

Great offer for Viennese people
“With the modernized athletics facilities, we offer the surrounding educational institutions additional sports opportunities. For us as Sport Vienna, the main thing is to offer low-threshold sports to the Viennese population and thereby encourage children and young people to enjoy exercise. “We will be able to do that with such facilities,” explains Anatol Richter, department head at Sport Vienna.

District leader Silvia Nossek: “Währinger Park has offered a special variety of sports and leisure opportunities for 100 years – and the district is investing a lot to maintain and expand this offering. The youth sports facility is used intensively by schools from Währing and Döbling. I am very pleased that the facility has now been modernized and that the skaters will also have their long-awaited floodlights.”

Cloakroom building, children’s playground and many opportunities for ball sports round off the youth sports facility’s offerings. The numerous adjacent trees, which are now irrigated using a modern system, provide shade on hot days and ensure natural cooling.

As part of the big celebration to mark the 100th anniversary of the Währinger Park on September 29th, the modernized facility was tested extensively – with a wide range of sporting activities, from volleyball to yoga to sack racing. There was something for all sports and exercise enthusiasts – in keeping with the idea of a youth sports facility!

Exhibition in the Währing office building
Währinger Park was opened in October 1923 and has served as an important recreational area for the population ever since. An exhibition in the Währing office building shows how diverse the park has been used over the course of its history and what there is to discover there today. The exhibition “100 Years of Währinger Park” opens on October 12th. Afterwards it can be visited from October 13th to January 12th during the opening hours of the office building.
