PARIS (AP) — Elye Wahi showed why Lens paid so much money to sign him by scoring a superb goal in Friday’s 1-0 victory over local Strasbourg in the French league.
The 20-year-old striker scored 19 league goals for Montpellier last season, earning him a €35 million ($38 million) transfer. His first goal with Lens came in the 16th minute, when he took possession of a pass from attacker Florian Sotoca, settled the ball with a backheel with which it eluded defender Gerzino Nyamsi, and defined with a powerful shot.
After finally winning their first game of the season at the weekend to climb out of the bottom of the table, Lens climbed to 13th place heading into Saturday and Sunday’s duels.
The club led by Franck Haise also received some motivation for its duel on Tuesday in the Champions League, hosting Arsenal, which is undefeated in the English Premier League.
Paris Saint-Germain, the defending champion, can take the lead this Saturday, with a victory over bottom-place Clermont. And he will have his star forward Kylian Mbappé, who has recovered from a minor injury to his left ankle, able to play.
Also on Saturday, the Italian Gennaro Gattuso will direct his first game with Olympique de Marseille, in a complicated visit to Monaco.
