“We are stunned and in deep sadness. Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” his artist agency said on Wednesday. Gould died the day before. Just a few weeks ago, Gould, born in 1962, made public a serious case of cancer.

Gould had been scheduled to play three major roles at this year’s Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth in the summer, but canceled for health reasons. The American was one of the most important held tenors of the past decades and held the honorary title of “Austrian Kammersänger”.

The festival announced that the festival and the entire opera world were losing “an outstanding singer, performer, educator, friend and valued colleague.”
