The commander of the Russian private military “Wagner” group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, announced on Saturday that his forces had “completely” taken control of the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine, Sky News reported.
Prigozhin confirmed this in a video clip, in which he appeared in military uniform in front of a row of fighters carrying Russian flags and Wagner banners.
The commander of the group added that his forces will start leaving Bakhmut on May 25, and will hand over the city to the Russian army.
Bakhmut witnessed the fiercest fighting since Russia began its military attack on Ukraine in late February of last year.
On the other hand, the spokesman for the Ukrainian army in eastern operations, Serhiy Cherefati, said, “The fighting is still continuing, and its center is in Bakhmut.”
The spokesman pointed out that “Bakhmut remains the main target approved by the Russian side and the (Wagner) group brings airborne units and motorized rifle units, as well as some special units.”
According to my honor, the Russian forces lost 92 dead and 156 wounded in Bakhmut in one day.
