One of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world takes place in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein on the first weekend in August.

Due to heavy rainfall, visitors to this year’s Wacken Open Air are asked to wait before arriving.

Meanwhile, the organizers are looking for alternative areas for the flooded campsites.

flock every year tens of thousands of music fans to the northern German town of Wacken with a population of 2000, to indulge in all kinds of hard rock and metal for three days. If the festival had to be canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the organizers are preparing this year torrential rains Headache.

Only a quarter of the cars left in place

“There is sometimes rain at festivals. Rain or shine (‹Ob rain or sunshine›, a motto of the Wacken Open Air, editor’s note). But rarely that much. That’s why the camping areas are currently not passable,” write the organizers on their website. For this reason, the journey to the festival had to be interrupted. Only around a quarter of the cars arriving on Monday might be allowed onto the site, it is said. However, cancellation does not seem to be an option.

The campers should huddle together in the evening to make room for more festival-goers. They were also asked to attach a towing eye to their cars before arriving, as all vehicles have to be towed to their place, reports the “Bild”.

Alternative areas are sought

“Because of the extremely high rainfall, we may not be able to use all of the planned camping areas later on, if the water stops on some meadows,” the Wacken organizers warned. Anyone who is already on their way should stop and look for a suitable waiting area until the situation has improved – alternative areas are also being sought. Those who have not yet started should postpone their trip if possible.

Wacken Open Air is one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open air festivals in Germany. The 85,000 tickets for this year’s edition were sold out within just five hours – at a proud price of 299 euros (287 francs) per ticket.
