The Symphonic Extreme Metal Quartet W.E.B. most recently convinced me with her work published in 2021 „Colosseum“which stands out in front of genre colleagues and their compatriots like SEPTICFLESH or NIGHTFALL definitely didn’t have to hide.
With only the second EP in more than 20 years of band history called “Into Hell Fire We Burn”, the Greeks want to pull up completely different strings and deliver material that has no place on their regular albums.
The title track is a raw Black Death missile with a good groove and nasty growls from Sakis Prekas, which completely foregoes the pomp and pathos of the last album. But this sound, even if it’s not particularly original, suits WEB quite well. Fun fact: The song was written spontaneously by Alexi Laiho while watching a guitar playthrough on YouTube.
This is followed by “Forbidden Storm”, a somewhat more bombastic song that sounds more like the Greeks, although it doesn’t blow your mind, but it doesn’t have to hide from the band’s other material. “Necrology Of Hel” is already known from the current album in question, but was re-recorded here and sung exclusively by bassist Hel Pyre, who could be heard in a duet with fronter Sakis Prekas on the original track. “Lunar Nightmares” is completely out of the ordinary because the remix features electronic beats and synths. The almost 14-minute “Clamor Luna Orchestram” takes a lot of time, building soundscapes and playing with different moods, choirs and orchestral moments. Last but not least, “Non Serviam” delivers one ROTTING CHRIST Classic that has been skilfully implemented.
Fans of WEB can access this without hesitation and listen to what it sounds like when the creative Greeks change their tune. Fans of the greats mentioned should, if they don’t know the band yet, start with the last released album or its predecessor “Tartarus” and they certainly won’t be disappointed.
