The deceased honored coach of Russia in cross-country skiing Valentin Samokhin entered the world history of skiing. This was announced to RBC Sport by three-time Olympic champion and head of the Russian Skiing Association Elena Vyalbe.
“In Soviet times, we were on the team at the same time, he trained men, I trained on the team. Professional, good person. I didn’t work more closely with him, he didn’t train me personally, but I knew him well. He unequivocally entered himself into history as a coach, because athletes trained with him, who later became Olympic champions and world champions. There was a national team coach, although for a short time, he was a good coach of regional teams. He definitely entered the world history of skiing, ”said Vyalbe.
Vyalbe responded to the support of athletes by the International Federation
Samokhin died on February 23 at the age of 85. He brought up and trained many famous athletes, including Olympic champion, four-time world champion Vladimir Smirnov, Olympic champion and world champion Alexei Prokurorov, world championship winners Sergei Kryanin and Andrei Kirillov.
For the last ten years, Samokhin has worked with skiers of the Khanty-Mansiysk Federal District, in particular with Olympic champion Evgeny Dementyev.
