Leader Sam Kuss’ lead at the Vuelta a Espana is getting smaller and smaller. On Wednesday, his first rival Jonas Vingegaard launched the next attack on the red jersey on the 17th stage, leaving the American standing along with his teammate Primoz Roglic on the infamous climb to the Altu de L’Angliru. Kuss’ lead over the Dane is now only eight seconds.

After 124.4 kilometers on the dreaded Angliru pass with ramps up to 23.5 percent steep, Vingegaard had to narrowly admit defeat to Roglich in the sprint for the day’s victory, but he has a good chance of overall victory ahead of the last four stages of the Tour of Spain . On his 29th birthday, Kuss came third, 19 seconds behind, and his lead over the day’s winner Roglic fell to 1:08 minutes.
On the last climb of 12.4 kilometers with sections that were over 20 percent steep, Vingegaard and Roglic pulled away from Kuss in the thick fog, with three-time Vuelta winner Roglic doing most of the leading work. Both top drivers paid no attention to their teammate, who was leading in the overall standings.
Birthday boy Kuss apparently saw no problem with this. “They are two great champions, I am very happy to be able to work with them,” he said at the finish. Vingegaard and Roglic assured that they would begrudge their noble assistant the overall victory at this year’s Vuelta. The 78th edition of the Tour of Spain ends next Sunday.
