The Ecuadorian cyclist Jonathan Caicedo (Forte Petrolike-Androni Giocattoli) is the new leader of the 59th edition of the Vuelta al Tchira by Bicycle by achieving victory in the fourth stage, a demanding day of 119.5 kilometers held this Wednesday in Venezuela between the towns of Tovar and Mrida.

Caicedo won alone in the arrival at the Plaza Bolvar de Mérida ahead of the Mexican Edgar Cadena (Forte Petrolike-Androni Giocattoli) and the Venezuelan Juan Ruiz (Gobernacin de Trujillo), second and third respectively.

The Venezuelan Fernando Briceo (La Guacamaya), who put on the leader’s jersey following achieving victory in the third stage, might not be with the best and ended up giving up the leader’s jersey.

With the race broken from the first stages, the Forte Petrolike-Androni Giocattoli team began to work together to maximize the options of its leader, the Ecuadorian Jonathan Caicedo, who ended up in the Mexican squad following his time in the World Tour with EF Education-EasyPost.

After coming back from the main group to the escape group, Caicedo showed his class and made his personal bet with an attack 3 kilometers from the end that turned out to be fruitful as it gave him the chance to win the stage and be the new leader of the race.

“I am very happy for this victory. I have to thank the entire team. We had talked regarding making the race very hard from the beginning so as to make it difficult and everything turned out well,” said Caicedo following the stage. “We dealt a hard blow today. Now all we can do is defend.”

The Vuelta al Tchira will continue this Thursday with the dispute of its fifth stage, of 134.4 kilometers and which will link the towns of La Tendida and La Grita. Be a new day with prominence for climbers.
