The Belgian cyclist Maxim Van Gils (Lotto Dstny) has won the 70th edition of the Vuelta a Andalucía-Ruta del Sol by winning his first and only stage this Friday, a 5-kilometer individual time trial starting and finishing in the town from Jaén from Alcaudete.

After the cancellation of the first two stages due to the lack of Civil Guard troops, motivated by the farmers’ demonstrations, and the announcement this Friday of the next two, the Vuelta a Andalucía was held only over 5 kilometers and will go to the story as the shortest in history.

Maxim Van Gils was the fastest in qualifying, setting a time of 8 minutes and 17 seconds. Second and third, 9 and 10 seconds away respectively, finished the Spanish Juan Ayuso (UAE Emirates) and the Italian Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain-Victorious).

Despite having all the permits and complying with established regulations, government authorities informed the organizers of their inability to guarantee the presence of the necessary law enforcement. This lack of security coverage for the test and its participants has left the organization with no other option than to suspend the two stages planned for the weekend.

Today’s test was held with a conventional bicycle given the improvisation of the time trial, which was not foreseen in the initially announced route of the Vuelta a Andalucía.

Maxim Van succeeded the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, winner of the last edition (2023), in the list of winners.
