VSV’s Road to Redemption: Overcoming Adversity in Professional Ice Hockey

Pulling yourself out of a downward spiral is one of life’s most difficult challenges, both privately and professionally. It’s no different for ice hockey professionals. And the VSV now seems to be moving out of just such a situation and regaining its self-confidence. Since the international break, during which neo-coach Marcel Rodman worked meticulously to solidify his game idea, there have been at least five points from three games and fewer weak knees for one or the other on the ice.

The Villachers also know how serious the situation is. If they lose today in Pustertal, they will slip out of the top six for the first time this season. “I looked at the table every now and then,” admits Rauchwald, “because we were always so clearly in the top four and suddenly you fall out of there and they pull away.”

Innsbruck and Pustertal continue to exert pressure

Now it’s important to contain the pressure from behind, more precisely from Pustertal and Innsbruck. “It’s important that we play well once more, then the points will come by themselves,” said Rauchwald, who is impressed by the move away from Rob Daum’s zone defense and the fast offensive game now practiced: “We give up fewer chances and run more is good for us. I suspect in the long run this approach is probably more successful.”

It’s not that important which line partners Rauchwald and the others go with, “because we have twelve good strikers, we just have to coordinate with each other.” It’s best to have a full lineup today at the end of the year in South Tyrol.
