39 years old and not a bit tired – on the contrary: an outstanding JP Lamoureux in the “Adlers” goal and a strong team performance were the guarantees for the success of the hard-fought 3-2 win for the Blue-Whites once morest really good Linzers.
After the recent “slip” once morest the Pioneers, the “Eagles” were looking for compensation once morest the Linzers. Alexander Rauchwald and Co. also started the match with a certain amount of anger in their stomachs. In the early stages, the Eagles’ top formation with Kevin Hancock, Robert Sabolic and John Hughes repeatedly caused a lot of danger in front of the Linz goal. But the guests took the lead 0-1 out of nowhere (5th). Niklas Würschl brought the puck in front of the Villach goal from an acute angle and the puck slipped off VSV defender Dylan MacPherson’s ice skate and into the net, making it unstoppable for VSV goalie JP Lamoureux. After that, the home team took more and more control and pushed vehemently for the equalizer: In the 10th minute, Robert Sabolic had the equalizer on his stick in a solo effort, but he narrowly failed to get past Thomas Höneckl in the Linz goal. Shortly before the end, John Hughes also failed to put the puck in the goal.
In the middle section the match picked up pace and an open exchange of blows developed with good scoring chances on both sides. In the 27th minute, more than 3,300 spectators cheered for the first time in the Villach town hall. This time the “Eagles” had the necessary luck on their side: It was a Linz defender who put the puck into his own goal following a Sabolic shot – 1:1. The “Eagles” had really arrived in the match, increased the pressure and gained a numerical advantage: Once once more it was Johnny Hughes with a dream pass from behind the goal to Kevin Hancock. The Villach center didn’t hesitate for long and slammed the puck into the net with a one-timer for a 2-1 lead (30th). The next chance to score followed quickly, but MacPherson narrowly missed with a hammer from the blue line. Two minutes before the end, the scene of the game: VSV goalie JP Lamoureux literally ripped the VSV fans in the hall from their seats and at the same time drove the Linzers traveling with them to despair: he saved with an incredible diving jump in the style of a football goalie Linz’s Emilio Romig, who was alone in front of the empty goal, sensationally held on to VSV’s narrow lead. The reward: a standing ovation for the Villach super goalie. So following 40 minutes the Blue and Whites remained in a narrow lead.
In the final third, Linz really increased the pace at the beginning. But the “Eagles” bravely fought back and sought the decision with quick switching play. However, one man in particular was always the focus: JP Lamoureux played magic, made one big save following another and left Linz’s strikers desperate. It was an absolute super fight that the two teams fought in the final section – gripping scenes on both sides. On the “Adler” side, it was once once more Robert Sabolic who powered through in the 51st minute, but narrowly missed out on Höneckl. But then came “Lanze” – Benjamin, the older of the two Lanzinger brothers, moved into the attacking third from the right in the 53rd minute and hammered the puck beautifully into the top corner with a wrist shot. Great lance! That was the decision, even if the guests reduced the score to 3:2 through Brian Lebler shortly before the end, but the “Adler” victory was completely fine.
