Leoben (OTS) – The Association of Socialist Students Leoben (VSStÖ Leoben) welcomes Rector Moser’s approach to promoting a separation between the university and the corporations.
For a long time, corporate students have only made up a fraction of the students at Montanuniversität, so their disproportionate presence in the university’s public presence is no longer appropriate. The outdated concept of men’s associations, which remain in existence long following graduation and offer strong professional networks, explicitly excludes women and is an obstacle on the way to actual social equality. In addition, the two women’s associations in Leoben are not only taken less seriously, but are also excluded from organizing the two largest traditional events, the Ledersprung and the Bierauszug, which are held every year by one of the 10 other all-male associations.
„We do not want to restrict students’ private club life, but student associations represent an image that does not correspond to the reality of students at Montanuniversity and should not represent our university to the outside world“, emphasizes the chairman of the VSStÖ Leoben Peter Graser.
„The popular Montanistic traditions for which Leoben is known go back to times long before student associations and are not dependent on them for their preservation. A modern university also includes celebrating traditions in a contemporary way and including all students in our diverse university.“, he adds.
The fact that many students agree with this was also shown by the election successes of the VSStÖ Leoben, which advocates for an inclusive and non-discriminatory university, in the last ÖH elections. The VSStÖ Leoben emerged as the parliamentary group with the largest number of votes at the Montanuniversität Leoben.
