Special debate on innovation, urban planning and mobility
Vienna (OTS) – “Urban planning is a politically thankless topic. It is very technical and if we decide something today, it will only take effect in a few years. At the same time, it is a highly emotional topic. In the worst case scenario, a new zoning plan causes a lot of excitement among citizens. This is of course difficult for politics. But that cannot be a reason to literally only focus on superficial things, as the red-pink coalition is currently doing,” said the planning spokeswoman for the Vienna People’s Party, local councilor Elisabeth Olischar, in today’s local council.
“I miss a concrete vision of where Vienna wants to go and how we want to develop our city,” says Olischar, criticizing the vague formulations in master plans and technical concepts provided by the city. “The wording in the specifications is so unclear that a lot is open to interpretation. This policy of vagueness and lack of transparency creates breeding ground for cronyism and corruption. There is also no right to re-sharpening or improvements. Every problem analysis, every suggestion rolls off. That’s not my understanding of politics.”
The topic of district renewal needs to be closely examined: “98 percent of the residential units are built on greenfield sites, only two percent of the existing buildings are densified. In times when soil sealing and heating of streets are major issues, you have to look at what already exists instead of building new areas in order to create a city worth living in.
Juraczka: Individual transport will never disappear
The finance spokesman for the Vienna People’s Party, local councilor Manfred Juraczka, dedicated his speech to the mobility debate. “I’m tired of hearing from the left that driving will no longer be fashionable in 2023. I don’t know of any study that describes the end of individual mobility in twenty years. Individual transport will never disappear completely, we should simply make alternatives more attractive,” said Juraczka, praising the current construction of the U5 subway line. “Every subway extension in Vienna has had a massive impact on the modal split. The modal split in Vienna doesn’t perform badly in an international comparison either.”
However, there is still room for improvement with the subway extension: “The U6 might still be extended from Floridsdorf towards the north, the U3 beyond Simmering, the U4 from Heiligenstadt to Klosterneuburg and, above all, the U4 from Hütteldorf to Auhof and even further Vienna’s surrounding area. That would slow down commuters. We can talk and plan regarding that now.”
A builder must also be found for the bus terminal as quickly as possible. “After a long discussion, we finally found a location and now there is a project backlog in Wien Holding to the detriment of the population and tourism. This spectacle is unworthy of Vienna.”
Finally, Juraczka appealed to invest in the green wave:
“The traffic light circuits are not cheap. Being stuck in traffic affects the quality of life of Viennese people. Traffic needs to become smoother once more!”
